Cancer Research
The field of cancer research spans diverse disciplines and requires a multipronged approach to understand the complex factors driving cancer formation and progression, as well as for the development of effective therapeutics.
BioTek instruments provide versatile platforms and integrated solutions for conducting a broad range of cancer research studies.
Key Advantages:
- Plate reader applications deliver efficient and robust results for cell- and biochemical-based assays.
- Automated live-cell imaging applications support detailed quantitative analysis while providing powerful insight into cellular behavior over time.
- Liquid handling instruments and plate stackers increase assay throughput and reliability.
Cell Proliferation and Viability Assays
Cell proliferation is a process where cells grow and divide in order to replenish cells that have died. A hallmark of cancer is dysregulation of the cell cycle which leads to an imbalance of cell growth. Cell proliferation assays are a key tool in cancer research a.nd drug discovery studies.
3D Cell Culture Assays
Three-dimensional (3D) cell culture has become a well established in vitro experimental approach as it provides an improved in vivo-like environment. The use of clear U bottom ultra low attachment (ULA) microplates that minimize cell adherence has become a standard for applications such as quantifying spheroid proliferation and viability.
Colony Formation Assays
The colony formation assay evaluates the proliferative capacity of a single cell. For applications such as cancer drug screening, it is important to distinguish cells that retain this proliferative capacity from those that do not.
Cell Migration and Invasion Assays
Cell migration is dependent on complex environmental signaling events and induced structural changes to the cytoskeleton. Multicellular organisms rely on cell migration for a vast array of normal biological processes. However, aberrant cell migration and invasion is a defining characteristic of cancer metastasis.
Cell Cycle Analysis
Growing and dividing cells progress though a pattern of gene expression, nucleic acid duplication, and cell division referred to as the cell cycle. Uncontrolled proliferation is the hallmark of malignancy; therefore, the determination of the length of the cell cycle is a key element in elucidating the parameters of cell growth kinetics.
Cell Metabolism
Characterization of cancer cell metabolic pathways and energy demands provides deeper insight into the disease process and treatment-induced effects.
